Between 30 January and 3 February, the launch of the European Universities Alliance for Sustainability: responsible GRowth, inclusive Education and Environment (EUGREEN) (https://www.eugreenalliance.eu/), led by the University of Extremadura together with eight other European universities: University of Gävle (Sweden), Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Science (Poland), Universitá di Parma (Italy), Université D'Angers (France), Universidade de Évora (Portugal), Otto von Guericke Universität Magdeburg (Germany), ATU (Ireland) and Universitatea din Oradea (Romania). The Alliance has been selected with a score of excellence by the European Commission as one of only four winners of the "European Universities" initiative to start their cooperation this year.

It was in July this year when "EU GREEN European Alliance" won the "European Universities" call, an initiative promoted and financed by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme, for which it received 14.4 million euros to cooperate in education, research and innovation for the benefit of students, teachers and society. The project approved by the European Commission has a duration of 48 months, when it will be evaluated to renew this quality seal. EU GREEN has as its strategic objective the creation of a European node of education, research, innovation and service to society, uniting its strengths with industry, civil society and public authorities.

As part of the official inauguration, the rectors of the 9 universities that form part of the Alliance travelled to Cáceres and took part in the commemorative act of Saint Thomas Aquinas on Monday 30 January. Together with them, there are 10 rectors of Ukrainian universities who have been invited as a result of a cooperation project of the Government of Poland, and through the University of Wroclaw, with the aim of symbolizing that universities are key to educate in human rights, peace and solidarity (Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University,Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Lviv National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnologies named after S.Z. Gzhytskyi, Odessa National Economic University, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine,Dnipro State Agrarian and Economic University, National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Uzhhorod National University, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University). On Monday afternoon, the City Council of Cáceres hosted a session where EU GREEN has exemplified cooperation actions with institutions and their territories.

During these days, the teams of the universities in the alliance are working together to establish the basis for the functioning of the consortium and the joint strategy to be followed over the next four years.
