The UNIVERSITY OF EXTREMADURA was created in 1973 (Decree 991/1973, of 10th May 1973, BOE of 18th May 1973). Its history is closely linked to the community of Extremadura. Initially it was made up of the Faculty of Sciences of Badajoz, the University College of Cáceres, the University Schools of EGB of Cáceres and Badajoz and the School of Agricultural Engineering of Badajoz. Since then, the UEx has increased its number of students, degrees and centres to four areas: the campus of Badajoz, the campus of Cáceres, the University Centre of Mérida and the University Centre of Plasencia.

More than 24,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students study at the UEx and another 8,000 take doctoral courses, specific degrees or continuing education courses. There are 1,500 lecturers and more than 800 administrative, technical and service staff.
